Brand and retail teams searching for a Nielsen alternative Saudi Arabia usually already have a syndicated retail feed. They are not asking for a cheaper clone of that feed. They are asking what the feed cannot tell the next listing, pricing or shopper meeting. This guide sits on the industry insights hub and is written for non-pharma FMCG and retail briefs. It is not an SFDA or physician-survey file.
The respectful default is to keep the syndicated audit for what sold, where and at what price, then commission custom primary research for why it sold and for the cuts the audit is not built to produce. BioNixus is a primary market research firm, founded in 2012, with 118 clients in 48 countries and 127 studies so far in 2026 (120 in 2025). Custom work is $10,000 to $60,000. The delivery scope is guaranteed in writing. Findings are not. See the industries hub, B2C market research and consumer market research. The global comparison of when a national retail audit is enough lives on our Nielsen alternative page; this briefing is the Kingdom-specific method.
Quick facts a 2026 Saudi retail brief can cite, October 2026
- SAR 919 billion of wholesale and retail operating revenues in 2024, up 8.5% from SAR 846.8 billion in 2023. Retail excluding motor vehicles was SAR 410.3 billion (44.6% of the 2024 total) (GASTAT; GASTAT 2023).
- 16.7% of 2024 business-sector operating revenues sat in wholesale and retail, on a SAR 5,500 billion business-sector total that grew 3.9%. The same activity took 20.7% of gross fixed capital formation (GASTAT).
- 36.3% of SME operating revenues, and 65.0% of micro-establishment (1–5 employee) operating revenues, came from wholesale and retail (GASTAT).
- 1.8 million POS terminals and SAR 162.2 billion of POS sales in Q2 2024; Mada e-commerce grew 19.3% year on year against 5.9% for POS (SAMA).
- SAR 44.42 billion of Mada e-commerce in Q1 2024, up 22% from SAR 36.53 billion a year earlier, across 263 million transactions — credit cards excluded (SPA).
- 35,300,280 residents at mid-2024, about 55.6% Saudi and 44.4% non-Saudi (GASTAT; my.gov.sa). Food and beverages took 27.9% of household monetary consumption in 2023 (GASTAT).
What does a Nielsen alternative Saudi Arabia brief actually mean?
A Nielsen alternative Saudi Arabia brief is not a request to cancel a retail-measurement subscription. It is a request to add a second layer. Syndicated retail measurement — NielsenIQ Retail Measurement Services is the name most FMCG teams use — is built to report what moved through cooperating stores: volume, value, share, distribution, price and promotion, on a consistent geography and calendar (UN Statistics workshop). Custom primary research is built to report why a shopper, a store buyer or a traditional-trade owner acted, in a named city, in a named language, on a named SKU or mission.
Those are different products. Scoring them on one “data quality” axis is a category error. The audit is the right quality bar for national modern-trade movement. Custom fieldwork is the right quality bar for shopper language, named accounts, traditional trade and e-commerce missions. BioNixus sells the second product. It does not sell a second national POS universe.
The Kingdom’s official series show why the two layers are not interchangeable. Wholesale and retail operating revenues grew 8.5% in 2024, faster than the 3.9% growth of the whole business sector (GASTAT; GASTAT). Retail excluding vehicles is 44.6% of that trade book — SAR 410.3 billion — but it is not one channel (GASTAT). Micro establishments take 65.0% of their operating revenue from wholesale and retail (GASTAT). Mada e-commerce grew more than three times as fast as POS in Q2 2024 (SAMA). A national modern-trade cell can describe the cooperating store book. It cannot, by design, be the traditional-trade tail, the credit-card-excluded digital basket, or the Riyadh-versus-Jeddah shopper file.
Write five specifications before anyone is asked to “replace Nielsen”:
- What decision is the next meeting making? A national share trend, a listing in a named banner, a price pack, a traditional-trade route, or an e-commerce mission. Each decision needs a different evidence type.
- Which channel is in scope? Cooperating modern trade, independent grocery, wholesale cash-and-carry, pharmacy, or digital. GASTAT’s retail total is not a channel (GASTAT).
- Which city? The Basic Law names Riyadh as the capital (Basic Law of Governance). A Kingdom average hides the only city that can carry the first warehouse.
- Which buyer? Saudi household shopper, non-Saudi working-age resident, or visitor. Mid-2024 residents were 55.6% Saudi and 44.4% non-Saudi (GASTAT). Census 2022 already showed the same split at 58.4% / 41.6% (SPA).
- Which language? Arabic is the Kingdom’s language (Basic Law). English is widely used among non-Saudis. Language of interview is a sample decision.
Desktop TAM and a syndicated dashboard can frame those questions. They cannot answer the last four. Adjacent country pages include retail market research in Saudi Arabia, FMCG market research in Saudi Arabia and the food and beverage company index for Saudi Arabia. Named-account cuts follow the same logic as account-level market research.
What syndicated retail measurement is built to do
Syndicated retail measurement is a standing service. Clients subscribe to a shared universe, a shared SKU dictionary and a shared calendar. A public United Nations Statistics workshop paper on scanner data describes the classic construction: a Retail Index built from store audits, plus barcode-level scan feeds (often called ScanTrack), typically delivered monthly, covering sales and share in volume and value, retail selling price, and numeric and weighted distribution (UN Statistics workshop). That is what most FMCG teams mean when they say “Nielsen” or “NielsenIQ” in a Saudi briefing email.
The product is valuable because it is consistent. Last month and this month sit on the same geography. A promotion can be read against a year-ago cell. A brand can see whether a SKU gained distribution or velocity. None of that requires BioNixus. If the next meeting is “did we grow in modern trade, nationally, on this barcode?”, the syndicated feed is the tool that was built for the job.
The Kingdom now has the electronic-payment density that makes scan-based measurement possible at scale. SAMA’s Q2 2024 bulletin recorded about 1.8 million POS terminals, 2,519.1 million POS transactions and SAR 162.2 billion of POS sales in the quarter, with POS value up 5.9% year on year (SAMA). Domestic banks had issued about 48.8 million ATM cards (SAMA). Coverage in any market is still a function of which retailers share POS and which stores are audited. That contract is between the subscriber and the measurement firm. This briefing does not guess it.
What the method is built to see, when the universe includes the relevant doors:
- SKU-level volume, value and share in the cooperating store set, on a consistent period (UN Statistics workshop).
- Distribution and price, including promotional price, in those doors (UN Statistics workshop).
- National or contracted-geography trend that a brand team can put next to last year.
- A shared language with retailers who already sit the same dashboard in listing meetings.
What the method is not built to be, even at full contracted coverage:
- A shopper’s reason for switching, stocking up, or walking past the fixture.
- A named-account negotiation file (the banner’s own POS is a different data share).
- The traditional-trade tail of micro retailers that GASTAT still treats as a large share of SME wholesale-and-retail revenue (GASTAT).
- The digital basket paid with credit cards, which SAMA’s Mada e-commerce series explicitly excludes (SPA).
- A bilingual instrument, a city quota, or a female-shopper cell. Those are sample-design jobs (Basic Law; GASTAT).
Keep the subscription if you already have one. The rest of this briefing is about the layer you add.
What custom primary research is built to do
Custom primary research is a commissioned study. The client names the decision, the sample, the language, the cities and the deliverable. ISO 20252:2026 sets vocabulary and service requirements for market, opinion and social research, including insights and data analytics (ISO). The ICC/ESOMAR International Code requires that participation be voluntary and based on clear information, and that consent be a freely given, specific and informed indication of agreement (ICC/ESOMAR). Those are the quality bars for the custom layer. They are not a substitute for a POS universe.
In Saudi Arabia the custom layer has four jobs the audit is not designed to do.
Explain the shopper. GASTAT’s 2023 household survey put food and beverages at 27.9% of final monetary consumption and housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels at 14.1% (GASTAT). Average monthly consumption was SAR 10,884 overall, SAR 16,028 in Saudi households and SAR 5,574 in non-Saudi households (GASTAT). A willingness-to-pay cell that averages those two groups is not a price. A U&A, a shopper-mission study or a pack test has to name the buyer. The audit reports the barcode. Custom work reports the person.
Reach the doors the feed is not built around. Micro establishments (1–5 employees) took SAR 478.7 billion of operating revenue in 2024, and 65.0% of that revenue sat in wholesale and retail (GASTAT). Small establishments (6–49 employees) took SAR 444.5 billion, with wholesale and retail contributing 35.1% (GASTAT). That tail is independent grocery, bakalas, wholesale cash-and-carry and specialist independents. Store intercepts, retailer interviews and mystery shops are how you describe it. A cooperating modern-trade POS universe is a different product.
Separate the digital basket. Seventy-one percent of 15–74-year-olds had bought goods or services online in GASTAT’s 2025 ICT survey; among Saudis the rate was 80.2%, and among Saudi females 82.8%. Clothing, footwear and sports goods were 88.8% of those online baskets; cosmetics were 40.2% (GASTAT). CST’s 2024 internet report put penetration at 99% and mobile data use at 48 GB a month (CST). SAMA then shows the payment split: Mada e-commerce grew 19.3% year on year in Q2 2024 while POS grew 5.9% (SAMA). SPA, citing SAMA, put Q1 2024 Mada e-commerce at SAR 44.42 billion across 263 million transactions, and stated that the series does not include credit cards (SPA). A store scan is not that basket. Custom e-commerce missions, platform intercepts and digital-journey interviews are.
Name the account. Listing, ranging and promotional support are decided by a buyer in a named banner, not by a national share cell. Account-level interviews, store checks and mystery shops produce the file that meeting needs. See account-level market research for the method, and keep the Saudi sample on a Saudi frame.
If the study interviews residents, the Personal Data Protection Law applies to personal data processed in the Kingdom. SDAIA’s controller-and-processor guide records the in-force date as 14 September 2023, with a one-year grace period to 14 September 2024 (PDPL text; SDAIA). Write the legal basis, the retention rule and the deletion path into the method note before the first incentive is paid. Price work has to state whether the shelf price includes the 15% VAT that ZATCA requires on taxable sales (ZATCA; VAT Law).
When the syndicated audit is the right buy
Keep or buy syndicated retail measurement when the next meeting is about movement in cooperating modern trade and the barcode already exists. Typical 2026 Saudi uses:
| Decision | Why the audit fits | What not to ask it |
|---|---|---|
| National modern-trade share, this period versus last year | Consistent geography, SKU dictionary and calendar (UN Statistics workshop) | Why a shopper switched, or what a Jeddah independent stocked |
| Distribution and price of a listed SKU | Numeric and weighted distribution and retail selling price are core RMS outputs (UN Statistics workshop) | Whether a buyer will list a SKU that is not yet on shelf |
| Promotion post-evaluation in cooperating doors | Promotional price and volume sit on the same period as the base (UN Statistics workshop) | Whether the mechanic was understood in Arabic, or noticed at all |
| A shared dashboard with a retailer who already sits the same feed | A common language in the listing meeting | The retailer’s own P&L, which they will not put in a syndicated cell |
The official backdrop supports using the audit for the modern-trade book. Retail excluding vehicles grew from SAR 369.9 billion in 2023 to SAR 410.3 billion in 2024 (GASTAT 2023; GASTAT). POS terminals number about 1.8 million (SAMA). That is a large, card-present, store-based economy. If your SKU lives there, and the question is “what happened?”, the feed is the right first screen.
Do not stretch it. Wholesale excluding vehicles was still SAR 305.0 billion in 2024 — 33.2% of the trade total — and sale and repair of motor vehicles was SAR 203.6 billion (22.2%) (GASTAT). Those are not an FMCG barcode universe. GASTAT publishes them separately for a reason.
When custom research is the right buy
Commission custom primary research when the next meeting cannot act on a national cooperating-store cell. The official series tell you when that is true.
Traditional trade and the SME tail
Wholesale and retail contributed 36.3% of SME operating revenues in 2024 and 42.9% of SME operating expenditure (GASTAT). For micro establishments the wholesale-and-retail share of revenue was 65.0%; for small establishments 35.1%; for medium establishments (50–249 employees) 19.6% (GASTAT). The smaller the door, the more the activity is trade. A national modern-trade feed is not designed to be that pyramid. Retailer interviews, store intercepts, mystery shops and a named traditional-trade sample are. BioNixus fields those from the Al Khobar field office with bilingual teams. That is practice, not a claim that any syndicated universe is “wrong.”
E-commerce missions
Ministry of Commerce counted 40,953 e-commerce commercial registrations in Q4 2024, up 10% year on year, inside a commercial-record stock of more than 1.6 million (Ministry of Commerce). Mada e-commerce in Q1 2024 was SAR 44.42 billion, up 22%, and the series excludes credit cards (SPA). In Q2 2024 the same Mada e-commerce series grew 19.3% year on year against 5.9% for POS (SAMA). GASTAT’s ICT survey already showed 71% of 15–74s buying online, with clothing at 88.8% of those baskets (GASTAT). Custom work is the right buy when the brief is a platform mission, a quick-commerce catchment, or a credit-card-heavy category the Mada series does not see. Pair it with online market research and social listening for brand growth if the brand also needs conversation, not only conversion.
Named accounts and new SKUs
A SKU that is not yet listed has no scan history. A listing meeting needs the buyer’s criteria, the fixture constraint and the promotional ask. FDI into wholesale and retail was SAR 18 billion in 2024 — 15% of inflows, level with construction (GASTAT). New capital is still walking into banners that already have a measurement feed. The feed will not tell a new brand whether that banner will range it. Account interviews will. See account-level market research.
City, language and shopper cells
Riyadh, Jeddah / Makkah and the Eastern Province are not interchangeable catchments. The Basic Law names Riyadh as the capital (Basic Law). A Kingdom average hides the only city that can carry the first warehouse. Arabic is the Kingdom’s language; mid-2024 non-Saudis were 44.4% of residents and many sit interviews in English (Basic Law; GASTAT). Saudi households spent SAR 16,028 a month in 2023; non-Saudi households spent SAR 5,574 (GASTAT). Custom quotas, bilingual instruments and city cells are how you stop averaging those groups. The sampling, language and mode rules are in our consumer survey company Saudi Arabia guide. The city test is in the Saudi market-entry playbook.
Compare method, not numbers, with retail market research in the UAE if the same sponsor is sequencing both markets. The instruments can be siblinged. The samples cannot.
How to combine syndicated vs custom research Saudi Arabia
Syndicated vs custom research Saudi Arabia is a stack, not a switch. The brand meeting should see both layers, labelled, never averaged. Seven workstreams cover a 2026 FMCG or retail brief:
| Workstream | Layer | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the syndicated audit | Syndicated RMS | What sold in cooperating modern trade, at what price and distribution, this period versus last year (UN Statistics workshop)? |
| Split the three channel layers | Desk plus custom | Which volume is modern trade, which is the SME/traditional tail (GASTAT), and which is digital (SAMA)? |
| Named-account file | Custom interviews and store checks | What will this banner list, range and promote? |
| Shopper U&A or missions | Custom survey / qualitative | Why did the household choose, switch or walk past — in which language, in which city (GASTAT; Basic Law)? |
| Traditional-trade sample | Custom intercepts and retailer interviews | What does the micro and small door actually stock and reorder (GASTAT)? |
| E-commerce missions | Custom digital intercepts | What is in the basket the Mada series sees — and what credit-card or platform behaviour it does not (SPA)? |
| Combined brand-meeting pack | Both layers, labelled | What should we do next, with the audit for “what” and the custom file for “why” and “where else”? |
Do not blend the bases. A national RMS share and a Riyadh shopper U&A are not one number. Publish both. If the first-year plan is a single city, spend the custom n on that city and keep the audit for the national modern-trade screen. If the first-year plan is a traditional-trade route in the Eastern Province, the Al Khobar field office is the operational reason BioNixus can field it. If the same sponsor is running a tracker in Dubai, sibling the instruments and keep the samples separate — see brand tracking in Dubai and the UAE.
A practical sequence for a 2026 launch or relaunch:
- Read the last four audit periods for the category in cooperating modern trade. That is the “what happened” screen.
- Map the three channel layers against official series: retail excluding vehicles at SAR 410.3 billion (GASTAT), the SME/micro tail (GASTAT), and Mada e-commerce plus the credit-card gap (SPA; SAMA).
- Commission the custom layer only for the decision the audit cannot close — listing, shopper why, traditional-trade ranging, or digital mission.
- Field bilingual, city-quota, PDPL-compliant interviews (Basic Law; PDPL; ISO; ICC/ESOMAR).
- Return a pack that keeps the audit chart on one page and the custom evidence on the next. Do not average them.
That sequence is the Nielsen alternative Saudi Arabia programme BioNixus actually sells. It is complementary. The global version of the same argument is on Nielsen alternative. Pair this guide with the feasibility-study note when the custom chapter feeds a wider investment file, and with customer satisfaction surveys in the UAE if the same brand also needs a CSAT or NPS module.
What a 2026 combination programme costs
BioNixus prices custom primary research in Saudi Arabia between $10,000 and $60,000. The range is the scope, not a rate card. Syndicated retail-measurement subscription fees are not public and are not BioNixus’s invoice. Cost on the custom layer moves with five choices:
- Decision. A one-city shopper U&A sits at the lower end. A three-city traditional-trade plus named-account plus e-commerce pack sits higher.
- Channel. Online CAWI among internet-using 15–74s is the least expensive complete when the task is short — 99.0% of that age band used the internet in 2025 (GASTAT). Store intercepts, retailer interviews and mystery shops add travel and gender-appropriate staffing.
- Cities. One Riyadh cell is cheaper than Riyadh plus Jeddah plus the Eastern Province. A four-cell national design is a different study from a single-city launch check.
- Language. Dual Arabic–English authoring, two cognitive pilots and bilingual coding cost more than an English grid with Arabic labels. They are also the difference between a readable file and a wording artefact (Basic Law).
- Incidence and quotas. A Saudi-female, 25–34, Riyadh, category-user cell is a different incidence from an all-adult national splash. The official sex and nationality splits tell you which one you are buying (GASTAT).
The invoice is not buying a guaranteed finding. BioNixus guarantees, in writing: the agreed scope, timing and deliverables; replacement of non-qualifying respondents at no charge; a minimum sample; re-field at our cost if agreed quotas are missed; and a pilot fee credited to the main field. Accuracy of findings is not a claim we make. Forty client reviews sit on the firm’s public profiles. The tagline is “Guaranteed in writing.” Price work has to carry the 15% VAT rule (ZATCA). Do not compare that project band with an unpublished RMS subscription.
How to choose a Nielsen alternative in Saudi Arabia
Ask every firm, including BioNixus, to answer these questions in writing before you sign:
- Will you replace the syndicated audit, or add a custom layer next to it? (The only defensible answer is add.)
- Which official series will you use for trade structure, SME mix, e-commerce and population, and what is the date of each series (GASTAT; GASTAT; SAMA; GASTAT)?
- Which channel is in scope — cooperating modern trade, traditional trade, e-commerce — and which is explicitly out of scope?
- Will the study report by city, or only as “Saudi Arabia”?
- How many interviews will you complete, in which language, and with which nationality, sex and age quotas (Basic Law; GASTAT)?
- What is guaranteed in writing — scope, minimum sample and re-field, or the findings themselves?
- How will personal data from respondents be processed under the PDPL (PDPL), and which research code will the field follow (ISO; ICC/ESOMAR)?
Global measurement networks are strong at the standing modern-trade feed. Local fieldwork houses are often strong at CAPI routing. A primary-research firm is hired to design the custom layer against official series and to hand it back labelled next to the feed you already buy. BioNixus does that job and will work alongside your existing measurement contract. It will not ask you to cancel it.
