Retail directory 2026

    Retail Companies in Egypt

Egyptian grocery is a collision of hard discount, local supermarkets, and Gulf hypermarkets. BIM taught value shoppers a new price. Seoudi and Metro remain the Cairene supermarket names. Carrefour (MAF), Lulu, and Spinneys brought the Gulf hypermarket format. Traditional grocers and chemist banners (El Ezaby, Seif) still take trips the dashboard files under “other.”

BioNixus studies banners as accounts — not “retail in Egypt” as a mood. Nielsen can size modern-trade categories. It cannot tell you whether BIM stole a SKU from Seoudi in Alexandria or whether a personal-care pack now turns in El Ezaby. Use this list with our retail market research in Egypt.

Best Retail market research firms in Egypt (2026)

Hard discount, local supermarket, Gulf hypermarket, bakal

Those are four different shopper missions. BIM is a small-box value trip. Seoudi and Metro are weekly supermarket trips with Egyptian ranging. Carrefour and Lulu are destination hypermarkets. The bakal is the fill-in. Pharmacy banners are a fifth path for personal care and baby. If the study averages them, it will recommend a planogram that exists in none of them.

    Local

Seoudi, Metro, Gourmet, El Ezaby, and Seif are Egyptian retail names with distinct missions — supermarket, Mansour-linked grocery, specialty, and chemist. They are not one “local retail” bucket.

      Multinational

BIM is the international format that changed the value equation. Treat it as a hard-discount system, not as a small Carrefour.

      • BIM

      Regional

Carrefour/MAF, Lulu, and Spinneys import Gulf hypermarket and premium supermarket operating systems. Their ranging and promotion logic is not Seoudi’s.

      • Carrefour (Majid Al Futtaim)
      • Lulu Hypermarket
      • Spinneys

      Retail banners & pharmacies

Traditional bakals remain the fill-in and the volume leak. Pharmacy banners take personal-care and baby trips. A modern-trade-only shopper study is a partial Egypt.

      • Seoudi Supermarket
      • Metro Markets
      • Gourmet Egypt
      • El Ezaby Pharmacy
      • Seif Pharmacies
      • Traditional grocers (bakals)

What is moving retail in Egypt

BIM as a format, not a banner anecdote

Hard discount changed pack architecture and promotion. Competitor work has to include BIM or admit it only studied full-range grocery.

Mansour and Metro as a system

Metro is not a generic local chain. It sits inside a distribution family that also touches FMCG. That overlap is a research fact.

      Gulf hypers as destination trips

Carrefour and Lulu pull a different basket. Do not merge them with Seoudi in the same “modern trade” cell without a reason.

      Chemist banners as grocery competitors

El Ezaby and Seif take baby and personal-care missions. P&G brand teams already know this; grocery-only samples still forget it.

      Alexandria and coastal ranging

A Cairo-only supermarket sample will misread Lulu and Carrefour coastal stores and the bakal density of Alexandria.

      Inflation and pack-down

Shoppers trade pack size before banner. SKU-level work inside each format is how you see that, not a banner NPS.

      Frequently Asked Questions

Which retail companies matter for shopper work in Egypt?

Carrefour/MAF, Lulu, Spinneys, BIM, Seoudi, Metro, Gourmet, El Ezaby, Seif, and the traditional bakal channel. That set covers hard discount, local supermarket, Gulf hypermarket, premium, chemist, and fill-in.

Why is BIM on a “premium” research firm’s Egypt list?

Because BIM is where value volume moved. Ignoring it is a catchment error, not a positioning choice. We study the accounts where the SKU turns.

Do pharmacy chains belong in a grocery directory?

When the SKU is personal care, baby, or OTC-adjacent, yes. El Ezaby and Seif are accounts, not a footnote under “other outlets.”

Can Nielsen replace banner-level shopper research in Egypt?

NielsenIQ can size modern-trade categories. It cannot tell you how a SKU faces in BIM versus Seoudi versus a bakal. That is the primary study BioNixus runs.

What should an Egypt retail brief name?

Formats and banners, not “Cairo retail.” Example: BIM versus Metro on a value dairy SKU in Alexandria — that is a designable study.
