Retail pharmacy directory 2026
Pharmacy Chains in Kuwait
Kuwait’s retail pharmacy channel is small, high-income and unusually shaped by the state: the Ministry of Health dispenses most prescriptions free of charge to citizens through hospital and polyclinic pharmacies, so private pharmacies live on OTC, beauty, expatriate demand and brands that are not on the MOH list.
Private pharmacies must be owned by licensed Kuwaiti pharmacists, which has kept the channel fragmented and made distributors, hospital groups and the Alshaya-franchised Boots banner the closest thing to chains. The large pharmaceutical agencies — Al-Hajery, Yiaco, Safwan and their peers — operate their own retail pharmacies alongside wholesale, private hospitals run captive dispensaries for insured patients, and Talabat and pharmacy apps have made delivery the default in Kuwait City. This directory lists the banners, distributor-owned pharmacies, hospital networks and state channels that determine how a consumer-health or prescription brand reaches Kuwaiti patients.

How retail pharmacy works in Kuwait
Two systems run in parallel. The Ministry of Health procures through its Central Medical Stores and dispenses free of charge at Mubarak Al-Kabeer, Al-Amiri, Farwaniya, Jahra and Adan hospitals and more than a hundred polyclinics, capturing most chronic and specialty prescriptions for citizens. Expatriates pay a health-insurance fee and co-payments, and the Dhaman health-assurance hospitals now serve expatriate workers, so a growing share of expatriate prescriptions is dispensed through Dhaman and private facilities rather than MOH pharmacies. The private retail channel serves cash OTC, dermocosmetics, supplements, baby care and prescriptions written by private clinics. Because pharmacist ownership limits corporate chains, the agencies that import medicines also operate the most visible retail networks: Mohamed Naser Al-Hajery & Sons, Yiaco Medical, Safwan Trading and Ali Abdulwahab Al Mutawa each run pharmacies that showcase the brands they distribute. Boots, franchised by Alshaya from its Kuwait headquarters, brings a beauty-led mall format and own-brand ranges. Private hospitals — Dar Al Shifa, Al Salam International, New Mowasat, Royale Hayat, Al Seef, Taiba and Hadi — dispense insured prescriptions inside their walls, and insurer formularies decide which brands are reimbursed. Delivery through Talabat and pharmacy apps has grown quickly since 2020, and MOH itself pilots home delivery for chronic patients, so digital fulfilment now matters for both channels.

What is moving retail pharmacy in Kuwait
Dhaman and expatriate insurance
Dhaman’s hospitals and primary-care centres are moving expatriate prescriptions out of MOH facilities into a new insured channel with its own formulary and procurement.
Private hospital expansion
New capacity from Dar Al Shifa, New Mowasat, Al Salam and others increases insured dispensing and gives brands an alternative to the MOH list.
Beauty and wellness retail
High disposable income and mall culture make dermocosmetics, supplements and premium baby care the profit engine of private pharmacies and Boots.
Delivery and digital ordering
Talabat, pharmacy apps and MOH home-delivery pilots have normalised online ordering, so brand visibility now depends on app listings as well as shelf.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there pharmacy chains in Kuwait?
Pharmacist-ownership rules limit corporate chains, so the closest equivalents are Boots under Alshaya, pharmacies operated by distributors such as Al-Hajery, Yiaco and Safwan, and private hospital pharmacy networks.
Who dispenses most medicines in Kuwait?
The Ministry of Health, which dispenses free of charge to citizens through hospital and polyclinic pharmacies supplied by its Central Medical Stores; private pharmacies focus on OTC, beauty and expatriate demand.
What is Dhaman?
The Health Assurance Hospitals Company, a public–private venture building hospitals and primary-care centres to serve insured expatriate workers, creating a second public dispensing channel with its own formulary.
How do brands get listed in Kuwaiti private pharmacies?
Through a registered local agent that imports the product and sells to independents, its own branches and hospital pharmacies; agencies with retail arms can guarantee shelf presence for the brands they carry.
What does BioNixus study about pharmacy retail in Kuwait?
Retail audits across Boots, distributor-owned pharmacies and independents; pharmacist recommendation studies; interviews with hospital pharmacy directors on formulary decisions; and shopper research on OTC, derma and delivery behaviour.
Is this list ranked?
No. Entries are grouped by role and included because they recur in BioNixus Kuwait fieldwork and MOH licensing records; order does not indicate size or share.
