Banks directory 2026

    Banks in Bahrain

Bahraini banking is a licence-class problem before it is a brand problem: the Central Bank of Bahrain publishes retail, wholesale and Islamic books on the same island, and a Manama hospital treasurer who treats GFH or Bank ABC as a high-street payroll bank will brief the wrong counterparty.

National Bank of Bahrain and Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait are the domestic retail chairs that still open most Manama conversations. Ithmaar, Bahrain Islamic Bank, Al Salam Bank and Khaleeji Bank fill the Islamic retail slice. Al Baraka’s Bahrain book and Bank ABC (Arab Banking Corporation) are regional groups that happen to be headquartered or heavily booked on the island. GFH Financial Group holds a CBB Islamic wholesale investment-banking licence — real, and not a retail deposit franchise. Gulf International Bank is a Bahrain-headquartered wholesale and corporate name. KFH Bahrain houses the former Ahli United franchise. HSBC, Standard Chartered and Citibank cover the foreign-parent slice. Bahrain Development Bank is a policy lender. BENEFIT is the national switch a Manama cashier actually sees. ila is Bank ABC’s digital brand — a branch-style retail surface under ABC’s conventional licence, not a separate CBB charter. This page is an account map for a brand or hospital-strategy desk, not a conference-badge ranking of wholesale houses.

    How the market is structured

How CBB retail, wholesale and Islamic classes share a Manama treasury

A private hospital in Manama typically keeps a dinar operating account at NBB or BBK, a sharia conversation at BisB, Al Salam or Ithmaar, and card acquiring that still prints a BENEFIT slip. Wholesale names — GFH, GIB, much of Bank ABC’s historic book — sit on a different CBB class and should not be forecast as the bank that runs nurses’ payroll. ila can onboard a founder-led clinic because it is ABC’s retail surface; the bank of record remains ABC. KFH Bahrain is the live name for paper that still says Ahli United. Khaleeji Bank is the retail Islamic subsidiary many GFH slides mention — that is the high-street chair, not GFH’s wholesale licence. Bahrain Development Bank can sit beside a commercial facility on an SME clinic-build. Digital brands on the island live inside these licensed books; CBB has not run a SAMA-style standalone digital-bank wave. Model merchant collection as BENEFIT plus an acquiring retail bank. Model a sukuk or wholesale Islamic ticket at GFH as a capital-markets job, not as a current account.

    Market structure

What a Manama hospital treasurer should not mix up

Payroll and card acquiring belong at NBB, BBK, BisB, Al Salam or ABC/ila. Wholesale Islamic investment belongs at GFH. Corporate wholesale belongs at GIB or the wholesale side of ABC. Policy programmes belong at Bahrain Development Bank. Mixing those jobs on one “Bahrain banks” slide is the usual error in a conference briefing. BENEFIT is the rail under the retail jobs, not a sixth bank.

    What is moving

What is moving banking in Bahrain

Licence class as the first filter

CBB retail, wholesale and Islamic rows are not interchangeable. GFH and GIB can be the right ticket for a sukuk and the wrong ticket for nurses’ payroll.

ila as a brand, not a charter

Founder-led clinics can onboard on ila because ABC already holds a conventional retail licence. There is no separate ila B.S.C. on the CBB register.

KFH as the live AUB name

Ahli United paper still circulates in Manama drawers. The live franchise sits with KFH Bahrain; a tender letter to AUB will miss the counterparty.

    BENEFIT as the cashier-facing rail

Outpatient collection in Manama hits BENEFIT before anyone names NBB or BBK as the acquirer, so the merchant conversation is the switch plus a retail book.

    Policy lending beside retail facilities

Bahrain Development Bank can sit next to an NBB line on an SME clinic-build without replacing CBB supervision or the dinar operating account.

    BioNixus fieldwork

How BioNixus studies banks in Bahrain

The accounts above are the ones our field teams and analysts work with. What a brand team typically commissions from us in Bahrain:
    • Manama hospital-treasurer interviews on how NBB and BBK split dinar operating accounts and why GFH was taken off a payroll shortlist.
    • Founder-clinic walkthroughs in Manama of ila onboarding and the discovery that the bank of record is still Bank ABC.
    • Outpatient-desk observations in Manama on BENEFIT terminals and which retail acquirer actually settles the day.
    • Sharia-board conversations in Manama on BisB versus Al Salam versus Khaleeji Bank, with GFH left on the wholesale slide.

    Questions

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Who licences banks in Bahrain?

The Central Bank of Bahrain, across retail, wholesale and Islamic classes. BENEFIT is the national switch. Read the class, not the skyline.

Is GFH a retail bank a hospital can payroll through?

GFH holds a CBB Islamic wholesale investment-banking licence. Khaleeji Bank is the retail Islamic name in that orbit. Do not put GFH on a payroll slide.

Is ila a separately licensed digital bank?

No. ila is Bank ABC’s digital retail brand under ABC’s conventional CBB licence. Deposits sit on the ABC book.

Which names should a hospital treasurer map first?

NBB and BBK for conventional dinar accounts, BisB or Al Salam for sharia product, BENEFIT as the rail. Add ABC/ila only if the brief is a founder-led clinic. Leave GFH off that list.

What does BioNixus study about Bahraini banks?

Treasury and merchant-acquiring interviews with private hospital and pharmacy groups in Manama; how panels treat CBB licence classes; and BENEFIT slip behaviour at outpatient desks.

Is this a ranking of Bahraini banks by assets?

It is a licence-class map. Retail books, wholesale houses, policy lenders, BENEFIT and CBB appear because Manama interviews keep naming the wrong class for the job. Order is function, not a dinar league.
